Loam Soil In Your Garden?
You’ve Hit The Lottery!

Loam Soil is the most coveted by gardeners, farmers and all who yearn to dig in the dirt. I would give my little gnome teeth for a Loamy garden. It is not actually a single particle type at all. But, is a combination of all the different particles sizes combined. It contains clay size particles, mixed with silt and sand , and usually with a good measure of organic matter thrown in. It will grow anything.

Loamy soil comes about when many different mineral substances are found together, each breaking down in its own way to form particles of differing sizes. Because of the mixture of varying particulate size, these soils drain well but not excessively, leach nutrients only moderately, and provide a good air supply to plant roots. The combination of different mineral types also results in greater fertility.

Eureka! Loam is the gardener’s holy grail. The only thing you can do to improve loam is to maintain the organic matter content.

Happy gardening,

Geefrank
