Back to the Basics

by Mary
(South Florida)

I love gardening! I've been in the garden since I was a child at my Gran's house. For a while I didn't have the means or the space for a garden so I made due with a windowsill.

Today I have the beginnings of a wonderful Victory Garden. I started with a patch of grass and started digging. First I had 4 feet by 4 feet, then I had 6 feet by 8 feet. Today the garden is bigger than ever.

I live in Zone 10 in South Florida. The soil is sandy and needs a few additions before planting veggies. I use organic methods, heirloom varieties, and organic non-gmo seeds. I try not to use store-bought items and recycle as often as possible.

I started a compost bin early in the year and added the mature compost before I transplanted seedlings. I use dead or fallen leaves for mulch which feeds the plant as the leaves decompose.

Currently in the garden are National Pickling Cucumbers, Cherokee Purple Tomatoes, Cal Wonder Bell Pepper, Black Beauty Zucchini, Jack-B- Little Pumpkins, Small Sugar Pumpkins and Black Beauty Eggplant.

I have a second batch of seedlings which are not ready to go into the garden yet. They include Hungarian Heart Tomatoes, Pak Choi, Jalapenos,Red Burgundy Onion, Huckleberry and Spinach.

I've been blogging about my adventure from start to finish at http://back2basichealth.blogspot.com/ I hope to decrease or eliminate my dependency on store-bought produce.

Happy Planting!
